Congratulations to the Bakery and Confectionary team who scooped a record number of awards at the ABST Conference!
The UCB team scooped a record 11 first prizes at the Alliance for Bakery Students and Trainees annual conference at Alton Towers in Staffordshire.
There were hundreds of entries from the UK and Ireland but that did not stop the university’s competitors walking away with a record haul of trophies.
It was the third year in a row that UCB lifted the Horton Trophy, won by bakery lecturer Ross Jones for the perfect loaf, and the Founders Cup, a team award for Jessica Dalton, Beth Swift, Shanice Robinson and Isobelle Calmiano.
Dawn Gemmell, assistant dean of UCB’s College of Food, said: “This has been a record year for us. It is down to the dedication of lecturers and the enthusiasm of the students.
“Our students are highly motivated. They come into the bakeries to prepare for competitions and they practice and practice.”
Among UCB’s other winners was Elaine Chan, whose chocolate wedding cake won the Slattery Trophy, the first time the university has scooped the prize. Emily Hughes took the Devon Rose Bowl for Lightly Fruited Cake, Amy Hands won the inaugural prize for shortbread and Jess Dalton also triumphed in the Victory Challenge Trophy for six decorated biscuits.
